It is no wonder, then, that when the question of whether Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are conscious arose after the release of ChatGPT-3, veteran science communication journalists sought his perspective.

The arguments Hofstadter presents stem largely from his 2007 book, "I Am a Strange Loop." He posits that for an ANN or any suspected intelligence to be considered conscious, it must perform what he calls the "Strange Loop." Hofstadter clarifies that if a being can execute this Strange Loop, it is not merely acting intelligently—it is genuinely conscious. Thus, he provides a serious philosophical foundation for testing consciousness, beyond traditional methods such as the Turing Test.
